COOLING TOWERS

What is Cooling Tower? A cooling tower is a heat removal equipment used to remove heat from a production or manufacturing process. The process can be a simple heating and air condition system in a building or an industrial process such that the cooling of water used is in the oil-refinery process, a chemical plant or a power plant. A cooling tower will vary in size according to the needs of the process it cools for. Some cooling towers are found on the rooftops of high office buildings and others are as tall as an office building or even larger. Cooling towers allow the water to be cooled and then returned for operating in the industrial or air conditioning process. This saves enormous amounts of money, time and energy.

Types of Cooling Tower

NATURAL DRAFT

Natural draft cooling towers are virtually maintenance free due to fact that they do not have any fan, motor or any moving part in there operation. The working principle of natural draft cooling tower is solely based on the amount of humidity level present in the air. They are designed to cool up the media naturally by drafting the air inside the cooling tower due to the pressure difference inside and outside the cooling tower. They do not have any turbulence media (like pvc fills or splash bar) for increasing the water and air contact area and time. They comprise of header along with nozzles and louvers. They are generally used where the performance of cooling tower permits flexibility. The approach value in such towers generally ranges from 7 degree to 12 degree c.

INDUCED DRAFT COOLING TOWER (IDCT)

Induced draft cooling tower is the most used cooling towers in the various industrial application. They generally have a prime mover, which is axial flow propeller type fan, for induction of air inside the cooling tower and turbulence media to increase the contact area and time, of water and air. These cooling tower dissipate the heat of water by adiabatic heat transfer. They are chiefly categorized in two ways based on the flow of air.

1. COUNTER FLOW INDUCED DRAFT COOLING TOWER

in counter idcts the water is sprayed using nozzles with high pressure and then while going through the turbulence media(generally pvc fills) water interacts with the air in 180 degree and thereby giving off the heat into air in form of latent heat. And so it is named counter flow idct. the counter sfg cooling towers have shown the performance of as high as 1.5 degree approach value. Achieving such low approach value is not possible by any of our competitors.

2. CROSS FLOW INDUCED DRAFT COOLING TOWER

In cross idcts the water is feeded in the water distribution trays after which it goes through the non-clogging nozzles on to the turbulence media. While going through the turbulence media (generally pvc fills) water interacts with the air in 90 degree and thereby giving off the heat into air in form of latent heat. And so it is named cross flow idct. The cross flow idct are more efficient in working in comparison to counter flow idcts. The maintenance in cross flow idcts is easier that in counter flow idcts. Also the size of cross flow idcts are more than a counter flow idcts for the given capacity. The sfg cross flow idcts are uniquely designed such that they are dramatically low in maintenance and very low in power consumptions as well. These uniquely designed cross flow idcts are result of keen observation of various problems faced by the clients and rigorous research in physical and thermal design.

FORCED DRAFT

Forced draft cooling tower are rarely used in industrial application due to their higher operating cost. They generally have a prime mover, which is centrifugal blower (axial flow fans in some cases) and is placed at the bottom of cooling tower which forces the air inside cooling tower. Turbulence media is also present inside cooling tower to increase the contact area and time, of water and air.
